"Boyd: Hi, I'm Boyd Anderson, a personal injury attorney in Lafayette, Louisiana. We're often asked questions about insurance, both liability and uninsured motorist coverage. Under Louisiana law, a driver on the Louisiana roads is required to carry liability insurance. What liability insurance is, is insurance in case you injure someone else. It protects you. The present Louisiana limits are $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident. Importantly, many people have claims that are worth more than the available insurance.
That's why we advise all of our clients to purchase when they buy their auto insurance, something called uninsured motorist coverage. In my view, this is some of the most important coverage that you need to protect yourself and your family. Uninsured motorist coverage covers you and your family if you're injured through the fault of another and that person doesn't have enough insurance or only has the minimal insurance.
Many of the claims that we represent include people who have personal injuries and medical expenses vastly in excess of minimal limits. Please purchase uninsured motorist coverage when you buy your liability insurance. If you have an accident in Louisiana caused by another driver, whether an 18-wheeler driver or a normal citizen, contact my firm, Anderson Blanda & Saltzman so that we can help you."
